Jackie Bañales-Garcia wins Customer Service Excellence Award!
Nevada HAND District Manager, Jackie Bañales-Garcia, received the Five Star Customer Service Excellence (CSE) Award for her coordination of relief efforts following the Parsons Place apartment fire earlier this year. The fire displaced 51 individuals from a downtown property that is owned and managed by Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada, a community partner of Nevada HAND. Jackie worked through the weekend to help Parsons Place residents to find temporary shelter, including transportation to vacant apartments, and oversaw the purchase and distribution of cots, bedding, food, and toiletries for the displaced residents.
The Customer Service Excellence Award is a program of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce to recognize excellence in customer service across a wide range of industries. The award is presented quarterly, with the winners eligible for the annual CSE Award at the end of each year. Last year, there were over 6,000 nominees from 550 diverse organizations in the Las Vegas area. Nevada HAND applauds Jackie and other employees who strive for excellence every day.

Las Vegas’ shortage of affordable housing is worst in the country, study finds
The Las Vegas Sun features a photograph of roofers at Nevada HAND’s Boulder Pines Family Apartments, leading a story about the lack of affordable housing options in Las Vegas and in Nevada.
Carpenters work on an affordable housing complex being built by Nevada HAND on Boulder Highway, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. Nevada HAND is a real estate development company that focuses on affordable housing projects.
Poor families seeking affordable housing are better off in any other metro area than Las Vegas. According to a study released this week by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Las Vegas has the biggest shortage of affordable and available rental homes. Only 12 affordable rental units are available for every 100 households classified as “extremely low income.”
Nevada overall fares only slightly better, with 15 units available for every 100 households. The national average is 35.
Las Vegas topped the list of large metropolitan areas with the lowest availability of available rental homes for extremely low income households. Los Angeles ranked second, with 16 affordable units available per 100 households in need. Houston, Orlando and San Diego rounded out the top five.
The National Low Income Housing Coalition study concluded by calling for tax reforms and a restructuring of priorities to help those households with the greatest housing needs.

Innovative residential complex will give families all-inclusive support
For children of families living in daily and weekly rental complexes on Boulder Highway, the quest for after-school activities is bleak. The 3-mile stretch running from Desert Inn Road to Tropicana Avenue is peppered with empty dirt lots and boarded-up buildings. There are no parks within sight, and kids in the area are lucky if their complex has as much as a small strip of grass to walk dogs.
That will change this summer with the planned opening of the Boulder Pines Family Apartments, orchestrated by Nevada HAND (Housing and Neighborhood Development) at 4375 Boulder Highway. In addition to affordable living, the complex will feature an innovative campus environment that includes a number of Southern Nevada nonprofit groups collaborating to provide a range of family and community services. That includes an onsite Boys & Girls Club for child residents that will welcome others from surrounding areas.

“MINI Takes the States” Road Rally Stops at Tropical Pines
Every two years, owners of British economy car MINI come together to motor across the United States on an epic fundraising rally they call “MINI Takes the States”. From May 4 to July 30, 2016 they made their motoring matter by raising money for Feeding America, a partner of Three Square Food Bank. In addition to the minimum $10,000 MINI USA donation, every dollar raised by MINI owners helps provide 11 meals to families in need. As one of their final stops on this year’s 4,397 mile journey, they visited Three Square Food Bank and then came out to Tropical Pines to interview residents who benefit from Three Square’s Senior Share supplemental food delivery program.
Tropical Pines residents Janice Klemme (center) and Janet Nelson (right) spoke about the importance of the Senior Share supplemental nutrition program with representatives from Three Square™ (Alexis Merz, left) and a free-lance writer and film maker from the Wall Street Journal Custom Studios.
