Resident Services Team Helps Set Students Up for Success

Each July, parents across the Las Vegas Valley help their children prepare for a new school year. Alongside the students’ excitement about starting a new chapter in their learning journey, the parents’ list of things to do can get long and time-consuming: find a quality backpack and fill it with school supplies, visit the dentist and eye doctor for annual exams, check to be sure immunizations are up to date, and get your kids prepared and excited about a new year of learning. For Nevada HAND residents, many of the school year “to-dos” can be achieved just a short walk from their front door, at Back-to-School Wellness events offered on-site at family communities.

Helping Families Check Off the Back-to-School To-Do List.

The Resident Services team designs Back-to-School Wellness events as a one-stop-shop for families with school-aged children. Nevada HAND provides free backpacks and school supplies, and we invite select community partners to bring together a robust collection of free education and wellness resources. Families can access free on-site dental screenings and eye exams (with free prescription glasses delivered a short time later), check on their required immunizations, and even preview social and educational after-school programs with local organizations.

In 2024, Back-to-School Wellness events held over 10 days served nearly 1,000 residents, helping families kick off the school year in the best way possible.

Support for Students Doesn’t End with Back-to-School.

During the school year, after-school programming features academic support (including an online math and reading skill-building tool, iReady), homework help, community connections, and supplemental nutrition. Select family communities provide early childhood enrichment resources and activities for baby – PreK children and their parents. During summer, Resident Services programming for children includes supplemental nutrition through Three Square’s Meet Up and Eat Up program, as well as fun skill-building community activities that help prevent the “summer slide” and prepare students for the upcoming school year.
